T&T Materials, Inc. ranks 52nd in 2016 Rochester Top 100 - Monday, November 14, 2016

For the third time in five years, T&T Materials, Inc. has been recognized as one of Rochester's fastest growing companies. Each year the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and KPMG LLP present the Rochester Chamber Top 100. Now in its 30th year, this annual listing ranks privately held companies based on the three most recent years of revenue growth. T&T Materials ranks 52nd on this years list. Companies must be headquartered in one of the nine counties of the Rochester region and have at least $1 million in revenue for each of those years. Rankings take into account both dollar and percentage growth.

The Rochester Top 100 Awards recognition dinner took place on November 3rd, drawing nearly 2,000 guests to the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Our President/CEO, James Terhune and Vice President/General Manager, James Mossgraber attended this exciting event.

“I am proud of our small but mighty staff at T&T Materials. The hard work and dedication of each of us has earned us a return to this esteemed list of Rochester businesses,” says Terhune. “I am sure that all of the executives that I stood along with on that stage would agree that they owe this recognition to their team, but most of them can’t fit their entire staff around one table. All four of us understand the unique challenges and advantages of a very small business, and we continue to prove that small can be mighty.”

Hamilton Stern Construction, LLC, a full-service construction management and general contracting firm, earned the No. 1 spot on the 2016 Rochester Top 100. The Pittsford-based company—led by Justin Hamilton and Chris Stern—works throughout the state in the commercial, education, healthcare, manufacturing, residential, retail and office sectors. Waste Harmonics, LLC and Dixon Schwabl, Inc. rounded out the top three.

T&T Materials, Inc. ranks 39th in 2013 Rochester Top 100 - Monday, November 11, 2013

For the second year in a row, T&T Materials, Inc. has been recognized as one of Rochester's fastest growing companies.  Each year the Rochester Business Alliance and KPMG LLP present the Rochester Top 100. Now in its 27th year, this annual listing ranks privately held companies based on the three most recent years of revenue growth. Companies must be headquartered in one of the nine counties of the Rochester region and have at least $1 million in revenue for each of those years. Rankings take into account both dollar and percentage growth.

Rochester Business Alliance President and CEO Sandy Parker has noted that, "Our community has undergone tremendous change in recent years. The Top 100 companies are examples of why the Rochester region is so resilient even through recessions and other challenges. The combination of these diverse businesses, big and small, fuels our local economy. Each organization earns its way onto the Top 100 list through hard work and dedication."

The Rochester Top 100 Awards recognition luncheon took place on Wednesday, Nov. 6, drawing nearly 2,000 guests to the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. As the smallest company in the Top 100, all four T&T Materials, Inc. employees attended the luncheon.

“It is an honor to have T&T Materials once again included among this most extraordinary group of businesses in Rochester,” says James M. Terhune, president and CEO. At the awards luncheon Terhune commented, “As all of the other executives here would surely echo, it is not only myself, but the dedicated staff of T&T that should be asked to stand with me in recognition. My pride in our team of knowledgeable and experienced professionals has only continued to grow over the last year. Without their hard work and dedication we would not be here.”

Ironwood Heavy Highway, the vegetation and construction management sister company of Terry Tree Service, earned the No. 1 spot on the 2013 Rochester Top 100. The Chili-based companies—led by Thomas Terry III and Timothy Pope—support federal, state and local governments in disaster-relief efforts in addition to providing other vegetation management services. RE/MAX Realty Group and general contractor Manning Squires Hennig rounded out the top three.

At the luncheon, Parker acknowledged the importance of recognizing the Top 100 through the observation that, “It’s a chance to celebrate the top privately owned companies in our region, many of which don’t get a spotlight shined on them. These employers truly are the drivers of our local economy. In the last year, they combined for over $12.3 billion in annual revenue and employed more than 98,000 people.”

Terhune attends 2013 National Veterans Small Business Conference - Friday, August 16, 2013

T&T Materials, Inc. attended and participated as an exhibitor at the 2013 National Veteran Small Business Conference held August 6-8 in St. Louis at the America's Center Convention Complex. Hosted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this year’s conference brought together nearly 4,000 attendees and over 400 exhibitors making this the premier annual event for veterans to connect with procurement decision makers, network with potential partners, build capacity and grow their businesses.

In addition to the very successful participation the business Expo, representatives from the company also participated in the various opportunities for “face time” with corporate and government procurement decision makers. The three-day conference offered several opportunities for forging these valuable connections, including:

  • Business Requirement Sessions – seminars focusing on future business requirements
  • Dining with Decision Makers – procurement decision makers hosting tables for informal discussions over breakfast and lunch
  • Networking Roundtables – discussions surrounding business capabilities needed to meet requirements
  • Conference Receptions – Informal gatherings to discuss opportunities to do business with attendees’ organizations
  • Expo Hall – provided participating businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and services. Also, where Procurement Decision Makers visited with attendees about business capabilities

Attendees, including T&T Materials, Inc. President / CEO, James M. Terhune, were provided with helpful tech tools to ease the creation of powerful and lasting business connections at the conference. VetGovPartner (VGP) provided a networking platform designed to help attendees connect with potential clients and business partners in the government and commercial contracting industry. Using Poken®, a small USB device, digital “business cards” could be shared among attendees by simply touching their Pokens, and this device could also be used to “check-in” to sessions and exhibit booths. Poken and VGP work together to enable attendees to share and collect business contact information that is organized and safely stored in VGP. Conference attendees can still access their VGP account to update their personal and organization profile, see what sessions they attended, download speaker presentations, and search for potential customers and business partners.

Upon his return from the conference, Terhune summarized his experience with the following reflection:

“Having attended the National Veteran Small Business Conference in previous years, in addition to many other conferences and training sessions focused on increasing the success of veteran-owned small businesses, this conference has consistently proven itself as the premier annual event of its type in the country. Our company has enjoyed a variety of benefits as a result of our attendance in the past and I am sure that this year will not be an exception to that trend. The incorporation of tech-based networking tools offers convenience, while focusing on the essential face-to-face interactions. The Department of Veterans Affairs should be applauded for their enduring dedication to consistently hosting this superior networking event year after year.”

T&T Materials debuts at No. 35 on list of Rochester’s 100 fastest-growing companies - Thursday, November 8, 2012

Chosen from among 235 applicants, T&T Materials has been recognized for three years of strong performance.
T&T Materials Inc. has taken the No. 35 spot on the 2012 Rochester Top 100 list of the fastest-growing companies. (T&T Materials staff pictured below. From left to right: Jim Burlingame, Coordinator of Finance/Accounting; Jim Terhune, President/CEO; Joe Morganti, Manager of Sales/Estimating; Jim Mossgraber, Vice President/General Manager)

Sponsored by the Rochester Business Alliance and KPMG LLP, the Rochester Top 100 program – now in its 26th year -- recognizes the fastest-growing privately held businesses in the nine-county region. The program saw a record 235 applicants in 2012.

To be eligible for the Rochester Top 100, candidates must be independently owned; must have posted at least $1 million in revenue each of the three latest fiscal years; and must have headquarters in Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, Livingston, Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming, Seneca or Yates counties. Rankings weigh both dollar and percentage growth.

This was the first year that T&T Materials made the list.

“I am honored to have T&T Materials included with such a stellar group of successful and innovative businesses,” says James M. Terhune, president and CEO. “The chief executives of these 100 companies attribute their success to the dedicated and resourceful people who make their products and serve their customers. Likewise, the accolades that T&T Materials receives reflect the efforts of our team of knowledgeable and experienced professionals. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together.”

T&T Materials delivers customized procurement solutions for military and aerospace applications to the U.S. Government, prime corporate contractors and private industry. T&T Materials employs four people in its Rochester headquarters.

The No. 1 firm on the Top 100 list this year was telecommunications provider 5Linx Enterprises Inc.

The Rochester Top 100 program provides evidence that “local businesses continue to succeed in a tough economy,” says James F. Mossgraber, vice president and general manager of T&T Materials. “The breadth of businesses in Rochester, and the region’s ability to innovate and grow, was clear from this year’s list.”
That notion is echoed by Sandra Parker, president and CEO of the RBA, who spoke at the Nov. 1 awards luncheon at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, which drew 1,800 guests. "We cheer both the considerable accomplishments of the 2012 Rochester Top 100, and the remarkable resiliency our business community continues to show despite some daunting challenges.”

Susan R. Holliday, RBA chairman, adds, "You are a role model for us all, a demonstration that hard work, dedication and creativity can lead to great accomplishment."

Selected from among hundreds of candidates, Terhune is one of 15 business owners nationwide participating in the 2012-13 Operation Hand Salute initiative, a supplier diversity program designed to support service-disabled veteran CEOs. The program provides executive MBA-caliber class work at John F. Kennedy’s Institute of Entrepreneurial Leadership (IEL) in Pleasant Hill, CA. Participants also receive ongoing mentoring from AT&T senior executives and invitations to AT&T Matchmaker events and Fast Pitch Business-to-Business sessions.
AT&T has announced its intention to commit 1.5% of its total annual spend to SDVOSBs.

Founded in 2006, T&T Materials delivers customized procurement solutions to the U.S. Department of Defense, prime contractors to the military sector, and private industry. T&T Materials generates innovative and effective solutions by drawing on more than six decades of procurement expertise in metals processing and manufacturing and a track record of meeting the stringent standards and protocols required for supplying the military and aerospace industries.

The Operation Hand Salute application process sought to identify successful small companies on the threshold of achieving the next level of growth, says James F. Mossgraber, vice president and general manager of T&T Materials. Terhune and Mossgraber believe that AT&T was impressed by T&T Materials’ track record – sales have doubled in each of the last two years – and its readiness to capture a larger portion of defense-related spending by the government and prime contractors.

AT&T also has expressed an interest, Terhune says, in tapping the company’s broad-based capabilities to source materials for the construction of cellular-service towers.

T&T Materials was committed to submitting the most professional and comprehensive application possible. “We approached the development of this application with the same commitment and resolve that we would bring to the preparation of a major contract bid,” Mossgraber says.

The first phase of Operation Hand Salute was led by Dr. Raul A. Deju, director of the Institute of Entrepreneurial Leadership, and featured lecturers including Bill Wiersma, best-selling author of “The Power of Professionalism: The Seven Mind-Sets that Drive Performance and Build Trust.”

Terhune’s participation in the program has precipitated a major updating of the company’s business plan, significant upgrades to its website and much higher expectations for growth, officials say. Where the company previously was reluctant to bid on very large contracts, Terhune now believes that tackling a $50 million opportunity is now within T&T Materials’ reach.

T&T officials describe a recent order that typifies their business model. A DoD manufacturing facility required a material with a higher-than-standard hardness specification and a tighter-than-standard diameter tolerance – the kind of product that distributors of raw materials would not stock. After exhausting other options, the government contract specialist contacted T&T Materials.

“By working with three of our supply chain partners,” Mossgraber says, “we purchased oversized material; coordinated the thermal processing, external grinding, the packaging and transportation between processors; and delivered a product that complied completely with the military’s product specifications. What our competitors cast aside as ‘too much trouble’ we saw as an opportunity to support our customer and burnish our reputation as a supplier of resources and ingenuity.”

“We take the risk so our customers don’t have to,” Terhune adds.

While generating healthy growth is an important goal, T&T Materials officials are particularly motivated by the opportunity to support those whom they consider their ultimate customers – the U.S. service men and women whose safety and effectiveness depend in part on the problem-solving acumen, reliability and timeliness of T&T Materials’ metals-sourcing solutions.

Terhune is the co-founder of Industrial Metals Inc., a $10 million metals brokerage that he sold in 2001. Mossgraber is former corporate director for sourcing and supply chain management for the Fluid Technologies Division LIGHTNIN Brand of General Signal Corporation (now SPX).

NASA Approves T&T Materials, Inc. as Supplier for Space Flight Materials - Friday, October 1, 2010

While the designation is described simply by four words, gaining approval as “Approved for Space Flight” was anything but simple for T&T Materials, Inc. The qualification and review process employed by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center spanned over ten months and proved to be extremely comprehensive and, at times, rather exhaustive. But with the goal of achieving the coveted designation solidly fixed on the corporate agenda, T&T Materials, Inc. developed and successfully implemented several new administrative and quality management systems to support the application. As a result of several on-site audits by NASA Goddard senior quality assurance staff members and numerous submissions of process control documents and teleconference interviews, T&T Materials, Inc. has been recognized by NASA as possessing the high standards of quality management, document control and material traceability necessary to supply raw materials for space flight applications.

Reacting to the notification from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center that T&T Materials, Inc. had been granted the “Approved for Space Flight” designation, James F. Mossgraber, Vice President / General Manager of T&T Materials, Inc. stated, “Everyone at T&T Materials, Inc. is justifiably proud to receive this designation from NASA. I know that it is currently “in vogue” for corporate marketing executives to boast that quality is everyone’s mission here at our company. But at T&T Materials, Inc. that is truly our corporate reality. When we supply a length of Titanium bar or a cut piece of Inconel plate to NASA, that raw material may very well become a “mission critical” component whose performance directly affects the outcome of a launch, a docking maneuver or a reentry sequence. We are always mindful of the serious consequences that may result from a failure in our quality management or a lapse in process discipline. While other raw material suppliers may have the luxury of saying “Hey, this isn’t rocket science.”; for us it truly is.”

About NASA Goddard Space Flight Center:
Since its inception in 1958, NASA has accomplished many great scientific and technological feats in air and space. NASA technology also has been adapted for many non-aerospace uses by the private sector. NASA remains a leading force in scientific research and in stimulating public interest in aerospace exploration, as well as science and technology in general. Perhaps more importantly, our exploration of space has taught us to view Earth, ourselves, and the universe in a new way. While the tremendous technical and scientific accomplishments of NASA demonstrate vividly that humans can achieve previously inconceivable feats, we also are humbled by the realization that Earth is just a tiny "blue marble" in the cosmos.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., leads the world in scientific discovery and understanding. Goddard is the home of innovative Earth science, astrophysics, heliophysics and planetary science.
